Here goes:

HITS:
=====
every action on your site is a hit, ie. suppose you
have your index page with 10 graphics, one java
script, and one e mail form. Now, every time someone
visits your index pages it loads, right.

That single load is counted = 13 hits
that is one hit for the whole page+10 hits for the
graphics+ 1 for the java s.+ 1 for the e mail form.

Hits are useless because they tend to have a bloated
figure for nothing, simply because if I go to your
index page, and reload 3 times that is 39 hits. they
don't really tell you much

Page View
=========

every time a page loads is a page view. It is good to 
know the page views because they help determine thae
path taken by visitors, most requested pages, and an
average of how many pages on your site each visitor
views.

Sessions:
=========
number of user sessions is how many visitors came
to your site, either new or revisiting.
In other programs it may be called unique visitors
or some other name, it is all the same.
