Another thought in line with this .... and in modest praise of places like
eGroups ....   when an address bounces, the numbers in the bouncing list don't
seem to be included in the subscriber list.   Thus, that number that shows is
the number that the messages "theoretically" are read by real people.

On the other hand, the subscriber numbers at eGroups DOES include those who
have elected to receive NO MAIL.  This is handy for those going on vacation to
avoid filling their box while they are away, but many forget to reactivate
their mail.   I try to monitor the situation and occasionally delete those who
have elected the "no mail" option.

This is important to remember when downloading the mailing list (which should
be done everyweek as a backup).... if you ever do have to mail to that list
you will need to remember to remove those who don't want to receive email.  I
would just as soon not have the "no email" option -- what's the point of
subscribing to something you don't want to read??
