Michael,

AOL's email client previous to version 6 can read either plain text or a
special AOL Rich Text format.  In practice, most newsletter publishers
create two separate mailings, a plain text version, for those on AOL and
others whose email client (e.g. Outlook 97) will not render HTML, and an
HTML version, for those people with email clients that can render HTML.

There are various methods for accomplishing this, but the least technical is
to have 2 separate lists - one which is sent a plain text version and a
second that is sent HTML.  However, there are services which will allow each
subscriber to choose whether to receive HTML or plain text. This allows you
to create your newsletter once and have it formatted automatically in both
HTML and plain text with the proper one being sent to each subscriber
according to their specified preference.
