I visited your Grinning Planet site.  It was very tastefully
designed.

With regards to your question on whether the format matters.  I
think it does.  You generally get a higher click-through rate
for HTML newsletter, but the downsides of HTML are many.  For
example, some web based email clients do not support HTML email
well.  HTML emails also load slower.
